Colposcopy results

I had my colposcopy appointment in February and just received my results/report. It's states that my CIN is ungradeable. Does anyone know what this means?

I have added the part of the report where it says this.
I rang my GP and they are unsure. It is going to MDT but I'm unsure how long this will take and just wanted to know if anyone else has ever recieved this on their report and what the outcome was?

B: Microscopy shows transformation zone mucosa. The ectocervical epithelium shows a lack of maturation with a high nuclear:cytoplasmic ratio but very limited mitosis. p16 shows block positivity. In the context of block positivity for p16 immunostain and incomplete epithelium, it is difficult to say that there is no evidence of high grade CIN. Therefore, it is best regarded as ungraded CIN (cannot exclude high grade).

  • Hello dette123 and thanks for posting,

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) means there are changes to the cells that cover the outside of the cervix. There are 3 grades of CIN and they relate to how deeply the abnormal cells have gone into the thin layer of skin (epithelium) covering the cervix. Look on our website here to see a diagram of this.

As far as I know ungradable means that the full height of the epithelium as seen in the biopsy sample can't be measured, so the pathologist isn't able to say for sure what depth any CIN is. I am afraid that is as much as I know.

The multidisciplinary team (MDT) probably want to review your screening sample along with the impression from the colposcopy examination before deciding what should happen next. MDTs are made up of health professionals from different disciplines involved in a specific area of medicine.

Things like this can be unsettling I know, but try not to worry overly about this result. Remember that screening is all about preventing cancer, the idea is to pick up abnormal cells and if needed, treat them to prevent cancer from developing in the future.
