Worrysome mole

I recently became concerned about a mole that had changed over the past 6 months or so.  It took my GP two weeks to get the photography taken to be sent to dermatology.  I received a referreal letter  today.  However, when I rang they stated there is an 8-9 week waiting list to be seen (even though my referral is marked as urgent).  I thought something like this would be seen much quicker.  Has anyone else experienced this delay?

  • Hello Rosebud16 and thank you for your post.

We know that many people across the UK are waiting longer to be seen. This has a lot to do with shortages in the NHS and how it affects clinical services. So you will find that people are waiting just as long and in some cases longer.

However, remember that your mole has been seen by the dermatology team and they will be seeing you in the clinic. I am afraid that it is not possible to know for certain if waiting longer to be seen will cause you any harm but it won't necessarily, and remember this mole may be harmless.

I am not sure if it will help but you could let the GP that referred you know how long you are waiting.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi - thankyou so much for your reply.  I will contact my GP to see what they say.  I understand waiting lists are difficult at the minute unfortunately.  Thanks anyway :-)
