Raised CA125

Hi!

I'm 28 and had an ultrasound scan on Thursday due to needing to empty my bladder more and slight pains in my lower abdomen. They phone me back straight after my ultrasound to say they've urgently referred me to the gynaecologist because I have a 4.7cm cyst on my right ovary that has a thick wall.
At the same time they did a full blood test and CA125, all bloods are fine but my CA125 is at 45.

I've not just got to wait 2 weeks for the gynaecologist but I'm just a bit worried because my levels are high and they were worried about ovarian cancer.

Just wondered if anyone had anything similar and it did just turn out to be benign cyst and nothing serious.

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your concerns. It can be unsettling waiting to find what is causing an abnormal result. There are however conditions other than cancer that can cause a raised CA125, particularly at your young age. It is however important to find the cause.

Ovarian cysts are very common  and before the menopause are usually benign (not cancerous) The Royal College of Gynaecologists (RCOG) has produced some information on ovarian cysts before the menopause which you can see here

The CA125 test can be raised for many different reasons. It is usually raised when there is any inflammation in the gynae area such as an ovarian cyst. It is not used as a stand alone test. The charity Target Ovarian has more information about this test here

Even though it is lovely to hear from other members of the forum it is also important to remember that everyone is different so it is difficult to compare one situation with another.

I do hope that you know more about your situation soon.

If you feel that you would like to ring and chat any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to do so.

Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the best,
