Indeterminate lesion in upper quarter on left breast.

As the title states but I have no idea what it means.  i recieved a letter to inform my dr about it.  the letter states they will contact me once the biopsy results are in to decide wether to test further or discharge me.

The radiologist said fibroadenoma but surgeon said he had to wait for biopsy results and said abnormal tissue. ( does this mean the same thing?)   I wish they would use the same words as Im confused.

I had a complex fibroadenoma removed appro 20 years ago.

  • Hello Jozza and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you are waiting to hear from the Breast Clinic and can appreciate that having tests is unsettling.

A lesion is an area where the tissue has changed and is out of the ordinary, this can occur for a number of reasons. Indeterminate usually means unclear. So an indeterminate lesion means something has been seen and the doctors can't be certain what it is although they may have some idea. Biopsies are often a way of being sure about something and together with the imaging (scans and X-rays) provide the fullest picture which might be needed to rule cancer out.

I am not sure why the radiologist mentioned fibroadenoma when the surgeon didn't, it might just be because of differing communication styles - I think some people tend to be more forthcoming than others.

Inevitably things like this can be quite alarming but try not to over think what happened, the biopsy is likely to have been routine and most probably taken to increase certainty.

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9-5, weekdays.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia

I was hoping that a clear biopsy would be communicated over the phone to limit stress.  The MDT thing is new to me.  I really do need to stop overthinking and learn to be patient.

MDT are done on a Thursday so hopefully there might be some news then this week.
