Red Spot on breast that won't go away

Hello all,

I am a 33 year old woman with a GG cup size.
Because of my size, I often get spotty around my breast area, also because I find it very difficult not to wear a bra.

Anyway, I have what looks like a spot on my left breast, more to the side than on the nipple area.

I have had it for a couple of months, and it hasn't changed size or shape in any way. It has always looked like a spot, and it is very superficial. It used to scab, now it hasn't scabbed in a while but sometimes it looks red, some other days it looks clear.
I have gone to 2 GPs about it and to the chemist as well, and they don't seem concerned about it. One of the GPs gave me an antibiotic cream to try but she said to me that it was nothing to worry about.

Because I am hyphocondriac, I always worry that something as simple as that could be something more synister and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same?

  • Hi ChristinaZ and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear you are worried about this spot, it's positive that you have had it assessed by two GPs and have been to the chemist.

Spots on our skin are very common. some will come and go more quickly than others.  Hopefully the fact that you have had it looked at and neither the doctors or the chemist was concerned about it, is reassuring.  You may find that it disappears again eventually.

You mentioned that you worry that something simple could be more sinister, you might find it helpful to look at the NHS site called Every Mind Matters.  There are hints and tips there to help with those thoughts that don't seem to go away, which might be useful.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel

  • Dear Rachel,

thank you very much for your reply.
What concerns me is that what before looked like scab now looks like a postule, a mixture between red and purple. I am on the second day of antibiotics, and I don't know if it is a case of it having to get worse before it can get better.

Unfortunately I have a very unhealthy relationship with my breasts, even though there is no history of breast cancer running in my family.

I have this terrible habit to compulsively check on the internet for things, and when I read about a girl whose spot on the breast turned out to be IBS, my mind spiralled and even though I have had this thing looked up by 3 different professionals, I still can't put my mind at rest.
