Abnormality during smear

During a routine smear test this morning, my nurse called the doctor in and said that there were dark in colour, lumps visible on my cervix. The nurse kind of worried me, saying she'd never seen this before doctor agrees that she could see the same. No referrals were made, very little explanation given and just told to wait for my results. I suffer with health anxiety so this has me very worried. Anyone experienced this, do I need to be worried?

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are waiting for results and I can imagine that this must be unsettling for you. There are many conditions far less serious than cancer that may be the cause of the lumps but it is not until you get the results that the doctor will be able to tell you any more. They probably could not give you any explanation as they were in the first instance waiting for the results of the smear.

Try and keep yourself busy and your mind on other things whilst you wait. The NHS have a website called 'Every Mind Matters' which has helpful suggestions when you are feeling anxious. Have a look here

Even though it is helpful to hear from other members of the forum everyone is different so it is difficult to compare one person with another. Keep an open mind.

I hope you know more soon.

    all the best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you for your reply Catherine, I appreciate your time. I am definitely trying to keep an open mind and hopefully won't have to wait too long for results- whatever they may be.
