Terrified its a melanoma

I have 2 fairly flat moles on my back that have developed a scab-like crust to them. One time I picked it off and it just crusted over again. Its been like this for a few years now and I have anxiety about seeing the GP. I also have a raised mole close to my armpit that has become desperately itchy about once a month. When it feels itchy it also feels full and tight. The rest of the time it is slightly squishy.

I have mental health issues including post natal depression, anxiety leaving the house and PTSD. So trying to motivate myself to book a GP appointment is almost impossible, as I'm terrified of what the results will be.

What can I do?

  • Hello CC89 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about the mental health issues you are having and that these moles are causing you worry.

Anyone who has a concern about a changing mole needs to see their doctor and get checked out to be on the safe side. Since the pandemic GPs often ask people to send in photographs of their skin problems so you might not have to leave the house to get their input. You could ask a relative or close friend to help you to make an appointment.

Not seeing the GP will probably cause more anxiety over time, so getting this sorted out soon is a good idea. Try and keep an open mind and take it one step at a time.

It might help to look at the Every Mind Matters NHS website for tips to help you cope with your mental health.

If you want to talk anything over please give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
