Kidney cancer advice

Hi everyone. My Mum unfortunately has been diagnosed with cancer of the adrenal gland on the kidney. She is on a lot of pain relief, however seems to be in excruciating pain after her first pee in the morning. Can anyone suggest anything she can do to ease this pain? Thank you for your time... Pippa

  • Hello Pippa and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation.

Because I am not involved in her care I cannot be certain what will help. However, taking paracetamol (or another type of medication you can buy - read the patient instruction leaflet with them) 20 mins to 1/2 hr before she passes urine, might lessen the pain.

A hot water bottle to her abdomen or lower back might help too.

If your mum has the contact details of her cancer team, in particular a cancer nurse specialist,  then she could ring them, leave a message if necessary and someone will get back to her. She could also let her GP know about this and get a prescription for pain relief. Anything she takes may need to be taken before she passes urine.

Hopefully, you will both know more about her situation soon and what can be done to make her feel better.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
