Can I ask for an Oncotype dx test on nhs?

Hi, I got my results today after lumpectomy and sentinel node removal. Cancer hasn't spread to the lymph nodes. I'm er+, her2 -, early stage cancer. I was told in meeting straight to radiotherapy in a few months time then tablets for five years.

My mind went totally blank with consultant, forgot to ask what stage, I know I'm grade 2. She did say early stage and we caught it early and she got it all out but larger than what they first thought.

I know most people want to avoid chemotherapy, but I am scared of not having it. It's really stressing me out. Everything I read appears to lean towards me being eligible, but it wasn't offered or discussed. Can I ask for it to be considered or do I have to just go with what has been decided of me?

I'm 52, think I'm leaning towards post menopausal, but can't be sure as had a coil removed in Feb so waiting to see if I get a period,  nothing so far.

Any assistance would be gratefully received. I will phone hospital tomorrow to find out stage and size.

Thank you as always for reading x

amazing news so happy for you .

I understand what you mean I felt the Oncotype DX was the only thing that was going to give me closure and it surely did gave me closure also

NHS do offer this lots have it on nhs I had it done private the cost was around £3200

I think you really have to stamp you feet to get it if it wasn't offered though but worth a try

  • Hi.  Same as you. 52.   Was told  Cancer stage 2 but not spread  to lymph nodes.  Had surgery in February.   And five days of radiotherapy in March.   I also had coil out in February. Had two weeks of bleeding doctor said it was a reaction to coil removal.  Been five weeks today that I've seen anything so like you waiting to see if periods start again.  Hopefully tamoxifen will help With that.  Doc said to make appointment next month to have injection to see if I am early menopause or been or going through it xxx

  • Badger hello! Hope you have recovered well from surgery. That's great news about your results. I think you can ask the consultant as many questions as you feel you need/want to about chemotherapy and oncotype. My tumour turned out to be a grade 3 and bigger than expected and I have to say that's rattled me a little too but they've put me straight to radiotherapy. I will have an appointment with the oncology team before I start and I'm hoping they can just explain everything to me. Take care xx

  • Hi lara, thank you as always for your reply. I can't believe my mind went blank in the consultants room. I had had my results meeting cancelled two weeks in a row so I had been waiting four and a half weeks for it. I had all the questions ready and then blank.

I'm so annoyed with myself. I know there has been an mdt case meeting to discuss my case but just feel like it's kinda you are placed in the easy pile, if that makes sense? I believe I have all the attributes, I think but could be wrong, hence having to ask the question why hasn't it been discussed with me. I know there is a delay now before I will get to actually speak with the radiotherapy people so I'm scared. I have suffered with depression for over 20 years and with my results meetings being cancelled twice I feel like I am sliding back down. I am trying not too.

Thank you as always for this forum for being able to discuss these issues.

  • Hi Ozzyt, thank you for your reply. Wow can't believe how quickly everything happened for you. I was told it would be months before I get my radiotherapy.

Didn't know about how they test if you have gone through menopause,  can you maybe update once you have done that?

     Many thanks xx

  • Hi case4,  good to hear from you. Did you find out your stage of cancer and the size?  That's what I need to find out today. Can't believe I didn't ask. It's probably one of the most important questions and proper mind block.

I'm hoping that I can properly speak to someone in the near future as I just need to get the test done so I know that I've thrown everything at the cancer. I would even take out a loan to pay for it if I have too. I would just like to have it explained as to what guidelines my mdt team used to decide it wasn't warranted for me.

Once explained I might be fine.

Hang in there seems like forever since we started this journey x

  • Hi.  Don't want to brag.  But I went privat with my husbands health care through his work.   Think that's why it all happened so fast.
my doctor said they they just do a blood test to see  you stand with menopause.   She wants to make sure I've not had a period for two months before she does the test xx

yes lovely you have come back ain't spoken to you in a while .

For me I was told no Chemo but I questioned it was told low grade and all that which was good but it's my body my mind it's all ok then telling me this but as I knew of the Oncotype DX and this test is your tumour no statistics ect so I needed to be sure and wanted closure and no way I could get closure by taking the word for it my Insurance paid for the test the score is if it's over 25 Chemo is required , my score came back under 10 so for me this was closure but I totally understand where you are coming from if there's a test out there why not offer it to everyone it's definitely done on nhs also my oncologist told me this .

if I have a bad day for me I think of my score and it instantly brings me around to normal thinking it was a lifesaver .

I would definitely ask about it just explain you need closure and this is the only thing that's going to do it .

My radiotherapy was planned for 6 weeks after surgery, but obviously as I wanted the oncotyoe test this delayed it two weeks my own fault but it's what I wanted and needed so my radiotherapy was 8 weeks after surgery don't panic to much it's told that it should be done within 3 months of surgery so you have plenty of time for this .
