Pain during colposcopy

Hi wondering if any one has same ?
I attended my colposcopy appointment but as soon as Dr inserted camera I got a dagger like pain and they had to stop. Dr was shocked in so much pain as she only slightly touched cervix .
I have previously had anal cancer in 2020 so stressing . It's the not knowing tbh . Is this a sign of cancer ?
thank you in advance

  • Hi Fredasgirl and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry that you are feeling stressed about your experience.

Some women do find it painful to have a colposcopy but this does not mean it is cancer.  There are some things that can cause this type of examination to be more painful, for example if you are very tense or perhaps have an infection present.

The doctor may have suggested things to try the next time they do a colposcopy might be helpful.  Some people will take pain killers such as paracetamol before they attend or try some relaxation exercises during the procedure. It may be possible to have a colposcopy with light sedation, or a general anaesthetic within a day surgery unit, hopefully your GP can advise more on this.

I hope this is helpful, but please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel
