Worry about skin cancer

So a few months ago I had an injury by my right eye and it developed into like a scabby lump on the surface of the skin and a moving lump underneath the skin

Docs referred me to dermatology who then referred me to plastics

saw one plastic surgeon who told me she didn't think it was anything to worry about but the 2nd one told me he thinks it could be skin cancer

yesterday I got a phone call asking me to go for an MRI, this panicked me a bit because surely only an MRI is done if they think it's spread

anyway had a contrast MRI this morning and the radiologist told me she was only scanning the soft tissues behind my eyes, can anyone tell me the reasons why? Also I have an appointment next week for a biopsy in theatre, will they remove the lump or just take a biopsy - it is classed as an inpatients appointment

  • Hi accxx and thanks for posting,

It sounds like you are having a worrying time at the moment.

An MRI can be used to look at what is happening under the skin and around the area the lump is.  It provides very detailed images when looking at soft tissues and is often used when there is a lump near the eyes which needs a closer look. Scans are routinely done to provide the fullest picture possible about what is the happening- so try not read anything into it.

There are several types of biopsy you can have, some will only remove a small part of the area, but others will remove all of the lump.  You can read more about biopsies here.  If you are having the biopsy done in theatre they may well remove all of the lump, but I am afraid I'm not in a position to be able to confirm this.

You may have a pre-op appointment where you can ask questions.  Whatever happens, the doctor will have to speak to you before the procedure.  They will explain what they will be doing and answer any questions, so they get your consent to go ahead.

I hope this is helpful but please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel

I know this wasn't posted long ago but I'm going through the same, I've had a urgent referral gp to plastic surgeons when I've literally no clue what is going on, my gp wrote to the eye hospital for advice and they wrote back asking for them to urgently refer.

I have something which is growing under my eye lid ot seems to drain puss Aswel  and my eye lid is thicker than the other, it's swell all the time and causes so much pain

  • hello sorry to hear this

Try not to worry, I was told mine was cancerr and i got the all clear last month

    Hope all goes well..... xxxx

  • Hi

thank you for responding, was it a fast process? And did they do a biopsy on the first appointment, I'm so worried because mine is right up under my upper eye lid in the middle part to.

  • Hello,

I can appreciate your concern. Hopefully you will be seen soon by the specialist hospital team who can assess and treat this. It may well be an infection from a cyst, and not necessarily a skin cancer, so do try to keep an open mind as best you can. You will be in good hands, and they will be able to treat this for you.

    Take care,

    Vanda
