Path lab results post colon resection surgery

I posted a question around a month ago and had a very helpful reply from a nurse both online and after I phoned for more information.   I am very grateful for this forum.

I will be the close friend, caring for someone I have known for around 40 years.  He is 73 and typically, never been ill since he was a child, other than colds etc.    He was diagnosed with a 'malignant 5cm colon tumor' and had surgery a few weeks ago to remove it by keyhole surgery.  I live in another part of the country but anticipated that I may be needed for longer than a few weeks, depending on his recover and what may be found.    He was in hospital for only 3 days, amazingly, and did not need to have a bag even though he was prepared in his mind for this to be a possibility.  Interestingly he is a very pragmatic type of man.....academic...very intelligent but not great with emotions.  His way of dealing with things is to fully educate himself and plan to the last detail, as much as possible.

Interestingly he never referred to the tumor as 'cancer'.   Not out of denial or anything, but perhaps this was his way of being optimistic.   He was/is though, very aware of the seriousness of it.   I expected to be nursing a very poorly man but other than not being able to drive yet, he only needed my help for a further week at home.  We talk on the phone most days.   He expressed how impressed he is by his care, right from initial tests via primary care, through to being in the hands of a fanatastic surgeon at his hospital.  He still has not had any results back from the lab yet, regarding the tumor that was removed. And therefore, his follow up appointement with the consultant has not been set.  He is not worried as he feels entirely taken care of and 'in the pipeline', but I was concerned that it is taking so long for the results.

Is this the normal length of time following resection surgery, to have to wait for results and any possible follow up treatment?

I haven't' been able to find out the answer to this question when I research online, hence my posting this.  We are all hoping for the best but every day seems so long, when waiting for results.

I would be really grateful for some information on this please.

  • Hello Heather7 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that your friend needed to have surgery, but glad to know he is recovering well afterwards.

Pathology results after surgery can take a few weeks to be reported on, I think the precise timespan depends on capacity in the local laboratories and how urgently they are required so I can't say what normal is. These results provide more detail to help the doctors decide about further treatment and may be reviewed by a multidisciplinary team before this is decided on. But should it be needed, further treatment can't start until things have healed up from the operation which can take several weeks.

Understandably most people are keen to find out their pathology results and waiting is seldom easy, so it is reasonable to ask the hospital team when they are likely to be back. Do suggest that your friend gets in touch with his specialist colorectal nurse to see what they can tell him.

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around 9-5, weekdays.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
