Terrified

Hi I found a lump in the top inner quadrant of my right breast on Saturday. Went to Gp on Monday and have an appointment on Friday which is my 50th bday. Sometimes I think the lump is round, sometimes I think it's angular. I am certain I have cancer and I am terrified. I have lost half a stone since Saturday. I can't eat. I am sure that I will be one of the unlucky ones, especially as its my bday. I have extremely bad health anxiety and I have worried about so many illnesses over the years. Now I think that this is actually going to come true. I don't know how long the lump has been there so I am now even thinking it could have spread and I might be terminal. On top of all this we were meant to be moving house next week. I can't get any peace. I am such a mess. I know I have cancer and it terrifies me. Please help xx

  • Hi Miska123 and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling so anxious about your situation.

There can be lots of different causes for breast lumps, they're often due to something harmless like a non-cancerous tissue growth (fibroadenoma) or a build-up of fluid (breast cyst).  They can be caused by cancer but are more likely to be something else.

Lots of people feel really worried when they are waiting for appointments.  During this time our minds can run away with us, imagining all sorts of things before they take place.  Unfortunately no one can tell you what is causing the lump until you have the appointment, and perhaps the team there will want you to have some tests to be sure what the cause is.  You can read more about what happens at a breast clinic here.

Some people find it helps to keep themselves busy while they are waiting, and it does sound like you have a lot to do with moving house and your birthday.  Try to focus on tasks to do with these things, rather than your up coming appointment.  I know it is easy for me to say this but it may help to keep your mind off your health.

You mentioned you have bad health anxiety.  It may be helpful to speak to your GP about this if you haven't already.  They will have experience supporting people who live with this and will be able to offer advice.  You could also have a look at the NHS website Every Mind Matters which is full of tips about managing those thoughts which can keep you awake at night.

I hope that this is helpful but please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel
