One swollen tonsil

Something or nothing..I  am not sure, and slightly concerned.

Visited Dr after having one swollen tonsil since January and red arches on throat accompanied with very slight sore throat.

Dr did blood test which all came back in range... nothing given to reduce swelling and no follow up appointment required.

Get very short bursts of earache but only lasting a minute or 2, tried gargling with soluble aspirin as suggested by pharmacist.

Because Dr didn't appear concerned I don't want to go back  because I feel like I am only wasting Dr time and an appointment someone else needs.

I am hoping this has happened to someone on here, and someone can tell me the outcome.. Do I need to take a chill pill and stop worrying please?

From a slightly concerned 49 Yr old.

Thank you in advance

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry you have a health worry. Only a doctor can make a medical assessment so the best thing to do is to go back and see your doctor if your symptoms are not improving.

Most of the time there are a variety of reasons for tonsil / throat symptoms and for most the cause will have a straightforward medical explanation such as infection and won’t be anything as serious as cancer. But it’s best to get checked just to be on the safe side if your symptoms persist.

Hopefully people will come along and share their experiences with you, as support like this can be invaluable. But it’s important to bear in mind that even if there are other people who have experienced similar things to you, I’m not sure that their experience will shed much light about what is going on with you.

I hope everything turns out to be okay. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
