Worried my breast cancer has returned

Hiya

I had breast cancer 8 years ago and a left side mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I had a few cases of capsular contracture so had new implants put in ... I've started to feel odd in the armpit of that side numbness and tightness around the implant .. so of course I have now convinced myself it had returned .. I cannot eat or sleep I'm in such a state I have an appointment at Guys next week but not until Thursday so I'm currently going out of my mind ... I am at home alone with my two children who both have autism so I'm trying to make out like I'm ok when I'm clearly not ... next Thursday can't come soon enough xxx

  • Hello Troublesgonesurfin and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you are worried in case your breast cancer has returned. I think it is all too easy and understandable for fear and anxiety to get the better of anyone who develops new and unexplained symptoms after having cancer treatment. I'm afraid no one here can say for sure what is causing these sensations so I can't reassure you, but I feel sure there could be another explanation that may well be more likely.

If you have a breast care nurse you could try getting in touch with them, but otherwise do your best to keep an open mind and stay occupied to distract yourself while you are waiting for this appointment - easier said than done I know.

It is often best to take things one step at a time and guard against anticipating outcomes, but our thinking can can go on overdrive when we are worried, try to do things that will be a bit relaxing if you can.

If you want to talk, give us a ring on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are available weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Hi Julia

thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

yes I am hoping a more logical explanation like maybe a problem with the implant itself or scar tissue being aggravated whilst doing too many Joe Wicks workouts

I did call guys again earlier today ... they suggested similar things to you .. try and do something that will take my mind off my anxiety ... it's the not knowing that's the killer ...

Thank you for the number it's nice to talk sometimes too.

    have a lovely weekend.
