Waiting for a diagnosis

I had my prostate scan on 16/1/23 and biopsy was done on the 24/3/23 and still have no news of a result or diagnosis. Is it normal to wait almost 3 months for a diagnosis???

  • Hi there, i'm Dave by the way. Its quite normal to wait for results after biopsy, but hopefully your results wont show any cancer. As you know not all prostate problems are cancer but if yours is then your already in good hands. Mine was quite aggresive but my treatment was succesful and 3 yrs on and i feel good. If you've any other queries give us a shout, there's only a few prostate patients on here but the ones i've spoken to have been very helpful. Good luck with your results

  • Hello Stevethebrush and thanks for posting,

Although there are waiting time targets for diagnosing or ruling out cancer in the NHS, these aren't always being met at the moment, so it is difficult to say what is normal just now. The speed with which tests are done and results reported on can vary depending on local capacity.

Cancer waiting time targets are explained on our website at this link.

You have probably have already tried to, but do chase up your biopsy results with the urology team at the hospital. If your hospital has one, you could try contacting The Patient Advice and Liaison Team to see if they can help at all.  You can find out more about this service on the NHS website here

I do hope you know more soon. Please give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are available weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Hi Dave,

Many thanks for your reply, it is appreciated.

I am glad to hear you are doing okay now. It is really messing with my head this waiting game I seem to be playing. However just having a reply like yours has made me feel better. It will be four weeks next Friday since I had my biopsy, so hopefully I should hear something soon.  Thanks again Dave, stay safe and healthy

  • Hello Julia,

Thank you for the reply, I would like to chat with someone other than family (not that they are being unsupportive) just talking to someone other than family is probably what I need right now

Thank you again for your reply and I will call on Monday some time

    Steve

  • No problem Steve, i know its hard not to worry and the wait can be difficult, i'm sure you'll be getting the results real soon and as Julia said a follow up phonecall wont do any harm.

Dont hesitate to contact me or anyone on here, i know what your going through and i know sometimes its just a helping ear helps so much.
