Positive FIT test, uncomfortable tummy with blood and mucus

Hello,

I have always had issues with my bowels, going 5 days and then one massive passing the size of a baby elephants foot. Have had blood on the tissue and in the poo but put it all down to the size? Recently my bowel habits have changed and I am more regular but this could be runny, very soft, long and thin, pellets and or small pieces of poo that looks like the Cadbury flake bar. I have had the rectum finger test and it is not piles.

I have been to the doctors due to my chest and breathing. Had blood tests and they came back with excessive -plasma creatinine. I was given folic acid to take for two months. The FIT test came back as positive and I have now been referred and have a call on the 29th from the colonoscopy nurse.

what are the chances of being told that I have cancer?

  • Hello Thorcat and thanks for posting,

I'm afraid I can't tell you exactly what the odds are, but positive FIT test results certainly aren't always due to cancer, I think more often they aren't. You probably already know that a positive FIT test means blood has been found, but that is all - the reason for the bleeding has to be investigated. Several other conditions can cause bleeding and your change in bowel habit might not be related to the bleeding or both could be due to something else.

Although bowel cancer is a possibility after a positive FIT test, more people will be diagnosed with another condition that explains the bleeding. I don't think you can find out much else at the moment.  I appreciate that having to wait to find out what is going on might be unsettling.  If you can, try to dwell on it and wait for the next steps along the way to getting an answer.
