Radiotherapy side effects

Hi there, I finished radiotherapy on the 22nd March and I'm experiencing horrid side effects. My lumpectomy scar, lymph node scar and my nipple are extremely red, sore and painful. My breast is red and blotchy and sore plus itchy. I wake up in the middle of the night in a lot of discomfort. I moisturise twice a day with Aveeno, but was wondering if there is anything else I can use to ease the pain. The radiologist sent me some Activheal Hydrogel and dressings. Should I use this now will it help?

  • Boops

    I had radiotherapy in November

I moisturised every hour and I mean plastered it on like I looked like I was breastfeeding doing this I didn't have any pain if you try maybe soaking it on it would help

    good luck love Lara ️

  • Thank you Lara I will try that tonight xx

  • I hope it helps lovely here to chat if you need anything

  • Hi there and thanks for getting in touch

I'm sorry to hear how you are feeling after the radiotherapy and appreciate how unpleasant these side effects can be.

As I am sure you are aware radiotherapy treatment continues to work for a couple of weeks after finishing so sometimes side effects can get worse before they start to get better.

The side effects you are experiencing are common as you will know and moisturising and following the advice from your own specialist team is the best thing to do.

If the radiologist has sent you activheal hydrogel and dressings I suggest you try these and see if they settle your symptoms down to make things more bearable. Do remember you can also take pain medications if needed as well until things start to get better.

Hopefully you will turn a corner soon where the skin starts to heal and repair itself. Do let your own specialist team know if things aren't improving or you are concerned at all so they can advise you further.

I hope you start feeling better soon

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hi Boops

I don't know if it's too early to start using scar cream but Boots make one own brand which is called Scar reducing cream which I found to be a game changer especially around the surgery (lumpectomy) scar  - My surgeon even made a note of it after I went for 6 month check. Hope you feel much better soon.

    Very best wishes

    J xx
