Waiting on mole biopsy

I recently went to the doctor after the lady I clean for pointed my mole out and said she didn't like the look of it and suggested I get it checked, I booked a doctors appointment and had to wait just over a month for an appointment, when I went to the doctors he said he would like a biopsy taken as it's was asymmetrical, difference is colour flakey and also dipped slightly he put this through as urgent, I am now still waiting for the biopsy to the done I have rang  the doctors several times to see when I would get an appointment and was told the last time I rang they have a backlog and it could be weeks or it could be months. I was obviously worried to begin with but now this many weeks later just waiting for the biopsy to be done let alone result into anxiety is going through the roof, this was due to be done at my doctor surgery and not a referral to the hospital and I'm not sure what else I can do.

I have rung around a few places to see about getting it done privately I have rang the Nuffield and been told the earliest I could get a consultation is end of may June sort of time as there is a wait.  I'm worried sick and not sure what else I can do. I have red up lots about melanomas and worries how quickly it can spread if left. I have 3 children and can't stop thinking what if it's not good news does anyone else have any suggestions of what more I can do ?

  • Welcome to the forum cdtdrd13 although I'm sorry for the reason you're joining us.

I know you're waiting to hear back from our nurses, so I just wanted to let you know that they are out of the office over the Easter holidays but they will get back to you as soon as they can when it re-opens on Tuesday 11th April.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello cdtdrd13 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you are waiting for a biopsy and can appreciate that not knowing when this will happen is stressful.

I am afraid all I can suggest is that you speak to your GP again. I don't know what the NHS arrangements are for removing suspicious looking moles in your area. But as there is a backlog for the waiting list you have been put on, ask if the GP can find out whether the waiting time is shorter somewhere else within travelling distance and if so, whether you can be referred.

GP practices have managers, you could also ask to speak to them to see what they can tell you.  It might help to talk to the GP again about this mole to ask how suspicious they think it is. You could also monitor the mole (taking a photograph of it can help to do this) to see if it is changing further and let the GP know if it seems to be.

I don't know if it is possible to get seen sooner in the private/paying system if you are able to travel to another town, this might not be feasible or affordable.  It is usually possible to get an estimate of the likely costs before agreeing to have private/paying health care.

I think waiting for an appointment with no timescale can be especially challenging. I do hope that you hear something soon.

Please give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays from 9-5.

    wishing you the best,
