CA125

Im really worried and have been in tears all day. Im 43 and have been having some irregular periods. Sometimes two a month and sometimes very heavy.
I recently had a scan where it showed I had two cysts, one in each ovary, a polyp and a fibroid. The doctor asked me to have a CA125 which has just come back today with a positive test of 43. I am now being referred for an urgent MRI.
I have been googling things, I know it's the worst thing to do ‍♀️ but am petrified. I am a really bad overthinker.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

This must be a worrying time for you.

Your symptoms and the result of your CA125 may be of some concern but they are not necessary anything to do with cancer. This is because the irregular bleeding is not necessarily caused by cancer, other conditions can cause the same symptoms as cancer. The CA125 test measures inflammation so when it is higher it can happen when there are other things going on such as cysts, polyps and can be affected by your period, not always cancer.

The MRI scan will give more information so you will have to wait until it is done and the report is produced to understand more about what is the matter. Searching online is not going to tell you anymore but will cause you to worry.

I hope you have support and please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
