Ultrasound could not pick up ovaries

Hi.

Just wondering if anyone knows why US could not pick up my ovaries? I am postmenopausal. I ate nothing for over 12 hours and drank the water and kept bladder full as directed. Sonographer mentioned shrinking of ovaries, as I am 67. Said gas sometimes too, but I had fasted and had a stool movement that day, so gas is unlikely.

Thanks.

Thank you for making a post in our Ask the Nurses topic area.

Our nurses are out of the office over the Easter holidays but they will get back to you as soon as they can once it re-opens on Tuesday 11th April.

  • Hello pmd1 and thanks for posting,

It isn't particularly unusual not to find one or both ovaries in postmenopausal women having ultrasound scans. It is probably because our ovaries get smaller after the menopause so they are trickier to see and also their structure changes so they don't stand out so well.

Do talk to your GP about this as they know your full picture, but as far as I am aware, not seeing the ovaries isn't usually a cause for concern.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia
