Wait time for Oncotype DX test

I had a mastectomy on 28th February, to remove a 65mm tumour (lymph node negative).

Three weeks later I had my oncology appointment where I was hoping to find out my remaining treatment plan (I should add that I have private health care). At that appointment, I was told it wasn't clear and that they would like to order a genomic test to determine whether chemotherapy was required. (I was a bit miffed that this hadn't already been done, by hey ho!).

Another 3 weeks on, I am still waiting for the results and a subsequent follow up appointment. There was a delay of a few days in ordering the test as the oncologist had requested the prosigna test which I now understand is for post-menapausal women, which at 40, I'm not.

So my questions:

1. How long are people generally waiting for the results of an oncotype DX test? I'm on day 14...

2. How long should I be waiting post-surgery for follow up treatment (I'm definately having radiotherapy and hormone therapy, its just whether chemo should come first). I'm currently 6 weeks and counting and with no plan as yet...

3. I'm currently feeling very unloved by my care team, my oncologist dismissed my worries about menopausal symptoms arising from tamoxifen, ordered the wrong test (knowing that I'm pre-menopause), and has generally not given me any information yet. Am I wrong to want a second opinion? (I should also add that I didn't get a follow up app with my surgeon as he had covid.).

Thank you for letting me rant! xx

oh no that's terrible another wait

Was it her2 negative low grade ?
I'm 48 mine came back very very low my oncologist told me that she thought it would come back low too , she wasn't recommending chemo until I asked for oncotyoe test she was happy not to give she told me in my circumstances it would of done more harm than good .

hope the wait isn't so long this time

  • Her2 - yes, Grade 2, but 65mm (which was about the size of my whole boob). I also had pagets disease of the nipple but they don't appear too worried about that.

Just have to keep my fingers crossed for a low score!

I think you will still get a low score I would be suprised if it comes back chemo required with no lymph involved ect

but it does come down to age I'm nearly 10 years older .

I got myseif prepared for chemo microbladed my brows bought wigs hats spent a fortune as my consultant told me chemo would be required but my 1st appointment with oncology it all changed for the better I no but wasted so much money in preparation and the mental side of waiting was horrendous I absolutely no how you are feeling right now bless you ,

  • Hi Pippy14,

completely get your anxiety whilst awaiting Onco result. I remember it all so well even 3 years on!! Mine took about 3 weeks to come back but that did include the Christmas break.

I did find the breast care nurses to be particularly  helpful and committed. Nothing seemed too much trouble. Even during those times I was being over emotional! They were fab at mopping up the tears and giving just that bit extra TLC. Those small things seem extra important when we are facing what feels like a mountain to climb.

I did wait about 10 weeks from my breast op to starting radiotherapy. I felt that was an age to be honest. There was a hold up for some reason but I can't remember why that was. ANY hold up at that point though feels like forever as you know.

I think our relationship with the cancer care team can be tricky if we don't feel understood or taken notice of. It's also hard to assert ourselves too. We feel battered enough without taking anything else on!!!

Hooibg you get a low onco score and from now on your treatment goes smoothly. It's a rocky road but you will get there.

    Kebbs x
