Bowels

Hi I have felt a lump in my left side I think  I've been having some tenderness as well I don't have any pain it's only when I touch my side  and when I eat food my left side starts to make gurgling noises and then I pass wind I haven't lost weight I eat normally I suffer with really bad anxiety I'm too scared to go to my Gp as I'm scared off what they will say as I had a scare some years ago

  • Please go to your GP.

If you are worried you will forget what you want to say, write it down so your Dr can read about your symptoms. Keep it factual and short.

If you are anxious, take someone with you for support.

Putting things off is not helpful, sorry to be blunt but the sooner you address the problem, the quicker it can be dealt with.

    Kind Regards

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms. There can be many reasons for bowel symptoms and most won't be anything as serious as cancer. Diet and exercise can have an effect on how our bowels work. The NHS have produced some information on eating well which you can see here

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling scared about seeing a GP but do remember that is what they are there for. By describing your symptoms to your doctor they may be able to make suggestions that may help with how you are feeling. It is also a good idea when symptoms carry on that anything serious is ruled out.

Anxiety about our health can also play a part in how our bowels work. You may find it helpful to look at the NHS website on 'Every Mind matters' which you might find helpful to look at here

I do hope that you make an appointment soon it may help your peace of mind. You may find it helpful to look at the information written by the Patient's Association. It has helpful tips on getting the most from your appointment. Have a look at the information here

You could also speak to your pharmacist at your local chemist. They may suggest some medication for your symptoms but they may also suggest that you visit your GP.

I do hope that this helps. if you want to talk this over with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a ring. Our helpline number is freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Catherine
