Chemo question..

I have a family member that's going stage 2 breast cancer. They've had the op too remove it and that's all sorted. she's now waiting for the next stage.

however they suffer with kidney problems, they only have 35% of the kidney that work.

she's confused about the next stage, can she have chemo? Or not at all?

  • Hallo Ass30 and thanks for posting,

I am very sorry to learn about your relative's breast cancer and can understand you asking about the next stage of her treatment.

After surgery, further treatment with chemotherapy isn't always recommended, it depends on the situation. If a breast cancer is hormone sensitive then medicines to block or reduce the amount of hormones in the body may be the preferred treatment.

It is routine to send away the cancer and other body tissues removed during the operation for examination. This can tell the doctors a bit more about the size of the cancer and the extent - they usually sample some lymph nodes from the armpit to look for any spread there. For now, it may be that the doctors need to have the results back from the laboratory before being able to say what should happen next with treatment.

A reduced kidney function can mean that chemotherapy isn't an option, but this is something only the doctors can decide after taking into account the whole picture. No one else can say for sure what sort of treatment will be recommended, but hopefully your family member will know more soon.
