Long wait for biopsy

Hi, Ive just been diagnosed with possible lung and kidney ( node) cancer. I had breast cancer 15 years ago and they are thinking its the breast cancer thats possibly come back. I have been given a biopsy date of 27th April . I'm really stressed as this seem so far away. Is this normal? I'd appreciate any views. Thank you.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are waiting for your biopsy and I can understand that waiting any length of time must be frustrating. I do know that there have been delays up and down the country and to a certain extent it may depend on the waiting list at the individual hospital.

I am not sure what the time limit is on waiting to get a biopsy but I do know that when cancer has comes back (a recurrence) NHS England has a waiting time target of 31 days. This time starts from the meeting in which you and your doctor have agreed on your treatment plan. This is in England. Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have not set this target though they do say that treatment should start as soon as possible.

You can read more about this on our website here

I am not sure whether there is anything that you can do about this wait for your biopsy but you could always try and ring the doctor's secretary to see if there is any chance of getting this done at an earlier date. It doesn't help that we have two four day weeks because of Easter.

I hope this helps. if you want to chat this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a ring.

We are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 400 but we are closed on the two bank holidays.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine
