Weight gain - tamoxifen

Hi, this is my first post so v v nervous. I've read a lot of posts and articles regarding weight gain whilst taking tamoxifen. A definite take away from this is that weight loss comes secondary to taking medication to keeping cancer away. My question is, can weight loss be achieved whilst taking tamoxifen? If so what regime/plan is best to support this. I feel terrible about 'moaning' about my weight when I know I've got such a lot to be thankful for. I'm happy to work hard, just looking for some help/inspiration.

Best Regards

Steph

  • Hi Birdie, I'm sorry that the drugs are causing you to gain weight. As someone who has struggled with weight for many years, I just want to wish you well. It's so hard (for me, anyway) as I love to eat! I'm heading in the right direction now and am determined to reach a healthy weight as I know it will reduce my risk of recurrence. Don't feel that you are moaning at all. It's your reality and I admire your willingness to do something about it. Good luck, Amy xx

  • This is a good day.  Don't always feel like this.  Went for a drive in my car today. Only second time since surgery.  Was ok. But now have amd painful boob.   Will try again in a few days.
been sat in garden Uber umbrella as have been told not to sit in direct sunlight for a year after radiotherapy.  A few people have said this now. But will check with my oncologist when I see him in two weeks xx

  • Has anyone else heard about sun and radiotherapy? Xx

  • Hello ozzyt and thanks for posting,

Radiotherapy is a local treatment affecting the part of the body it is directed at. So the skin in that area can become red and sore during treatment and afterwards that area will be more sensitive to sunshine which is why the advice is to protect it.  Some drug based cancer treatments can also make skin more sensitive to sunlight which can affect skin all over the body. Skin care advice is often bundled together to cover all aspects of treatment. Our website has information about radiotherapy and skin at this link

In general, even with no history of cancer treatment, we all need to know how to stay safe in the sun - our website excplains this here

Give us a call if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around from 9-5 weekdays.

    Best wishes,
