How do i make sure I’m taken seriously

About 6 weeks ago I developed discomfort (like bra wire poking in) at right armpit/sude of breast, followed short time late by a long, thin indent/line when pushing breast. Referred to clinic on 2week pathway. Thankfully mammogram was clear.  BUT pain continues - can't wear underwire bra now - and bit at front of armpit feels tender and slightly swollen.  Burning sensation if I lie on that side.
Had GP appointment last week, which was postponed to this week as GP was sick.  I never see same GP as practise is so big and busy so feel like you start from scratch every time.  I'm feeling very worried that it could be IBC (so a mammogram would miss it) or that, because I had a clear mammogram, they'll think I'm a hypochondriac and blame perimenopause or anxiety.

So ..... what do I say to make sure I'm taken seriously and not dismissed.  My anxiety is horrendous and I'm not sure I can cope with this - I just want an answer, be it good or bad. I'm worried things might progress while I'm waiting for someone to tell me what's going on.

  • Hi there, I would certainly tell them you arnt satisfied with the tests done as it is well know not every breast cancer is picked up on mammogram. If you still have unexplained symptoms then I would push for a reason why this is. You can't be too pushy, breast cancer is not a joke.

I was diagnosed September 21 and had the works last year ending in June. I found a lump but was due a mammogram so I waited, on the day I explained to the lady I had found this lump and she actually felt it then advised me to see my Gp as the results would take 3 week. This I did and was referred to the breast clinic, I was seen in days. I had biopsies done and a marker was put in. Off I went on holiday and while I was away I received two letters, the result of my mammogram which basically said everything is fine see you in 3 years and the other letter was for an appointment on the Monday I returned from holiday. You can imagine how shocked I was to be told it was cancer. I thought I was going to be told it's a cyst and what they would do with it, how wrong I was.

please just be sure you are happy with the explainations for yr symptoms. I have to say you are probably fine as not all symptoms are breast cancer but I have heard so many stories that turn out not to good.Maybe ask if it's possible to have an ultrasound!

I hope you get sorted and I'm sure you will be ok. Best of luck xxxx

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling anxious. I can understand having unexplained symptoms can cause a lot of worry.

It is good news that your mammogram came back clear but if your symptoms are continuing then do go back and discuss it with your GP. Breast cancer is not normally associated with pain but it is worth talking it through with your GP as there may be an infection which may need a course of antibiotics. The pain could also be associated with any hormonal changes particularly if you say you are perimenopausal.

The breast clinic sees patients on a day in day out basis and if there were any warning signs I am sure that the doctors would have suggested further investigations.

Breast Cancer Now have some information about the different types of pain that women can experience which you can see here

In the meantime try and wear a well supporting bra and take some regular pain killers such as paracetamol to try and get on top of the discomfort that you are feeling.

I do hope that you are able to make an appointment soon. Let them know about your concerns and hopefully they will be able to put your mind at rest.

If you feel that it would be helpful to ring one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more then welcome to do so. Our telephone number is Freephone 0808 800 4040

    With best wishes,
