When does consultant look at results?

Hi I'm awaiting my CT scan results ,I wrntfir the scan 2 weeks ago. They text me to say appointment with consultant 5th April.

Does the consultant look at results beforehand or when you are there before you go into the appointment ?

Bearing in mind a few weeks ago the consultant spoke to me in the phone and said he hasn't even looked at my biopsy results yet as he knows I didn't want them until after the CT scan. He did kind if give me a diagnosis if which u already knew from the breast clinic. Si the CT scan was to check if it has spread or not.

  • So every consultant under every specialism takes part weekly in something called an 'MDT' meeting (multi-disciplinary team meeting) - it's a round table made up of lots of different consultants, nurses, physios, scientists etc where they review tests & discuss all potential - and current patients and discuss next steps.

after this MDT meeting your consultant will make plans for next steps, and only after this meeting will they meet with you to discuss these.

these meetings happen every week, and they will review and discuss your case every week while you are under their care. Can be very reassuring to know that a team of people are making decisions regarding your care

  • Thank you very much fur your response, but are they have likely got the CT scan results back a d that's why they have given a date or are they provisory booking a date knowing that the results shluid be back before then ?

In order for me to go to the appointment I cannot do early morning which it is and it's the day after my son's very worrying and important appointment regarding his scoliosis and x-rays. It takes alot of organising just to get to my sons as head sleep issues so me andy son are only going to bed at 8am. My sister is having to take over his care which is very difficult she also needs to be rested and sleep , thenmy dad epuid have to drive me and mum to the hospital, its bad news and I've not slept then I won't sleep again afterwards as I just can't go to bed as my sister will turn herd toget her head down.

I just wish they could give me some indication over the phone and then arrange a more suitable time to follow up face to face to discuss treatment options.

I would sooner know at home where we can prepare and also deal with my son's care too.

I'm exhausted I'm in pain and I've got the nurses coming out every two days..

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate that it is an anxious time for you just now.

Appointments are scheduled assuming that the results have been made available to the doctor beforehand. The consultant will usually review the scan results themselves, before the actual consultation with you. It helps to think of questions beforehand you might want to ask, whilst you are there. They will probably discuss all the available results together with you, and be able to talk over with you about your treatment plan. Often, there will be a breast care nurse present at the clinic appointment, who can be contacted after with any other questions that may spring to mind after.

    I hope that this helps,

    Wishing you the best,

    Vanda
