No one to talk to about my fear of coming colonoscopy

I am a 64 year old lady

I had some blood tests that I usually have for diabetes this time an iron test was included.

Results all good except iron which was low

Going forward after 2 more blood tests it was still low, did 2 poo tests both fine

Referral for what I thought was to be endoscopy but seems Iv been referred to g astrology and colorectal clinic ? I don't understand why and I'm terrified. I have a real fear from childhood and experiences of hospitals and dying.

I feel like i now have symptoms of all sorts that im not sure are real or imagined!!
Next week I have a phone call assessment I guess to discuss what happens next

My head is taking me to some dark places and Iv no one I feel able to share with.

  • please try not to think about it - the dark way. they probably want to make sure. Go for the checks and assesments its better to be safe than sorry. My mom ignored all the checks and she ended up having 4 strokes one after another which left her disabled but with lots of recovery she is keeping independent

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are going for investigations. I can understand how unsettling this must be, waiting for your appointment and not knowing what to expect.

Your telephone appointment will be a good time for you  to explain how you are feeling.  Do let them know about your anxieties and your past experiences of hospitals so they are aware when you go for your appointment. Before your telephone appointment you may find it helpful to note down a list of questions. Sometimes it can help when you feel anxious to know more about what to expect so you can prepare yourself.

Remember the doctors and nurses are there to help and support you, and to find out what is causing any symptoms that you may have.

There are many different conditions far less serious then cancer that may explain your low iron levels but it is important that the doctors find out the cause.

Our nurses are on the helpline 9-5 Monday to Friday and we would be happy to talk any of this through with you on the phone. Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
