Melanoma stage 1a 2020 now BCC 2023

Hi

1sr time posting on site. In 2020 I had a melanoma stage 1A removed and since then I have been trying to deal with stress of this  (lost a non familial family member to melanoma and know how devastating a melanoma diagnosis can be). About 12 weeks ago noticed red patch on hairline which wasn't healing. Tried hydrocortisone thinking it may be eczema, then tried Efudix cream given to me by my melanoma team which I tried daily for a couple of weeks - no joy with that. Saw dermatologist 3 wks ago, looked at it under dermatascope and believes it is a bcc. Given my recent history of melanoma I was referred to plastics team under 2 week rule. Saw Plastics Prof Wednesday, he too examined and confirmed he thinks bcc. My question is how long will I wait for bcc removal and what's the chance it could be something more sinister than bcc?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand knowing someone who has been diagnosed with a similar cancer can make you more aware of your own situation.

It sounds like you have had the opinion of both the dermatologist and the plastic surgeon and they both believe that the lesion on your hairline is a BCC (Basal Cell Carcinoma). We can't diagnose you but both of the specialsits examining you see patients with skin lesions on a daily basis and are aware of any warning signs. I am sure that if they had any concerns then they would have arranged for you to have it removed as soon as possible.

There is more information on our website about BCC which you can see here

Basal Cell carcinomas are not treated urgently as they tend to grow very slowly and very rarely spread so there is usually a wait for a few months. It may be helpful to get in touch with your dermatology clinic to see how long the wait will be.

We have some information on skin referrals on our website here

The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) have produced some information on BCC's which you may find helpful to read here

If you notice that it is getting any bigger or you continue to have concerns then do talk it through with your GP.

I hope some of these links will be helpful. If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are very welcome to give us a ring.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
