Peri anal cyst

Hello,

My dad has had prostate cancer for several years now and has been under monitoring. He's recently had a scan and the results show a peri anal cyst. The letter he's received says this is a right anterior transition zone leasion with a PIRAD score of 3. Does this mean this cyst is likely to be cancerous and has now spread beyond the prostate? Or can it just be simply a cyst?

Thankyou

  • Hello and thanks for your post

PIRADS stand for Prostate Imaging – Reporting and Data System and a score between 1 to 5 is usually given to help diagnose prostate cancer. As you will see from this link  it is difficult  tell from the scan if a score of 3 means that prostate cancer is present there or not, so further tests are needed.  Prostate Cancer UK has some further information here.

Your dad's specialist team will be able to discuss what the next steps are. If he has a specialist nurse involved in his care then perhaps they can discuss this further with him You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope you both know more soon. Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
