  • Hi Chunkey and thanks for posting.

It can feel worrying when you are having tests and investigations done, but do try to remember that going for these tests does not mean that you necessarily have cancer.

Some hospitals will send you for a MRI scan before doing anything else, such as a biopsy.  The MRI scan can help the doctor decide if any further tests are needed and give them more information about what is happening. So it does sound as if this is what would routinely happen.

PSA rises can be caused by other things such as urine infections, but it is still important to get things checked out if it is raised.

Your GP will usually refer you to see a urologist if you have a higher PSA than would be expected for your age.  Sometimes you will also have a digital rectal examination, where the doctor feels your prostate to see if it is enlarged.  They will send an urgent referral, which means you will be seen quickly, hopefully within 2 weeks, but sometimes it does take longer.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Rachel
