Pain 1 year after chemo

I had breast cancer, I had 4 1/2 months of chemotherapy (pacclitaxol and ec) then 10 radiotherapy sessions. It's been almost a year and I'm left with severe Lymphodema of the breast which has its own challenges. However, I'm in incredible pain every day, more so at night with ches in my legs and ribs and upper shoulders. My legs and ribs being the worst.
my question is is this type of pain the norm 1 year after chemo? I've had a dexa bone scan (awaiting results) and currently on hormone therapy for 5 years. So dealing with the challenges of menopause too. I can't help the anxiety there's something else wrong. Asked the Onco more than once but to be honest all symptoms get brushed under the carpet. She didn't even recognise Lymphodema until it was so severe I'm now facing mastectomy.
anyone else still in a lot of pain 1 year after chemo and rads?

  • Hello there

You have posted on the ask the nurses section of the forum and whilst anyone is welcome to comment here as you are asking for others experiences you may wish to post on an different thread as well.

I'm sorry to hear about the treatment you have had and the pains you are having now, this must be getting you down and understandably wanting some answers.

Symptoms like pain can have many different causes so at this point in time I think it will be impossible for anyone to say for sure what may be going on. Unfortunately cancer treatments often do have side effects and sometimes these can go on for a while after treatment has finished. Nerves and muscles can be damaged through surgery and radiotherapy causing chronic pain for some people.

Hormone therapy I'm afraid to say can also cause joint pain as oestrogen levels drop so this could also be playing it's part as you enter menopause as you mentioned.

Likewise lymphoedema can also be an after affect of all these treatments as lymphatic are damaged and result in a swelling that can be very debilitating. Compression bras and vest tops can help with lymphoedema in the breast as well as self massage and good skin care but I assume you are already getting the support and advice you need for this.

It must be disappointing to have these dismissed by your specialist so I suggest you speak to your GP about these so they can properly assess you. If needed they can run some more tests to find out more as well as make suggestions of things to ease and manage the pain.

Do get back if needed or give us a buzz on 0808 800 4040, we're here week days 9-5.

I hope things settle down for you soon.

    Take care

    Naomi
