Fullness in neck / What happens at an ENT lump clinic

Can general swelling or fullness in the neck region (submandibular) on one side be a sign of cancer vs glandular swelling / lump mass?

Also what happens at an ENT lump clinic, what can you expect in terms of tests, time spent at hospital etc?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Luckyleft1 and thanks for posting.

General swelling or fullness around your neck can be a sign of several things, and not necessarily cancer.  Unfortunately no one on this forum will be able to tell you what has caused this, but it sounds like you have been referred to an ENT lump clinic so hopefully you will have some answers soon.

There is some information here about what to expect at an appointment.  This information may not be from the hospital you go to, but it will give you an idea of what will happen.  How long you spend there will depend on what the doctor decides to do when you are there.  If you are worried about this, you could get in touch with the clinic you will be attending when you get your appointment.  They will be able to tell you more about what happens in their clinic.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Rachel
