Diverticulitis / missed periods /pain/ bloat/ sickness

Hi All

I would just like to share my story. Would like to first of all to say I have been diagnosed with diverticulitis. I have always had regular periods, quite heavy at times. In September I didn't have a period ( perimenopause) then in October I bled for 2 days (spotting). From October up to December I was noticing blood in my urine, which I was seeing gp about. In November I seemed to have a normal period but for 7-9 days.

I have been awaiting for colectomy surgery due to diverticulitis in left colon. I was asking my GP about blood in urine could be linked. I had addressed to GP that my periods at same time had become absent and sporadic, which is very unusual ( although menopause maybe cropping up).

i had surgery beginning of February this year, which went from key hole to open surgery. A few day following this I was being sick and CT scan showed my bowel had slipped resulting in more surgery. The CT scan showed I had Adnexal right cyst, consultant had said some of my pain maybe resulting in this and a gynae referral made by my gp for this.

When I returned home (week 2) I felt extremely unwell, vomiting /nausea, low abdomen cramping - right pain . Then what followed was a period which I hadn't had for 3 months this was 28th Feb, my last period was 3rd of November. I contacted my GP re Adnexal cyst I was told about for GP to refer to gynae.

It is hard to distinguish the pain of two surgeries. But something is telling me the pain and symptoms prior to my period is due to ovaries. The same symptoms have happened again (although awaiting the bleed/ so cannot confirm that as yet) I suffered extreme fatigue yesterday where I lost a day, I have been vomiting and also my wee has been intermittent. My right side of abdomen is swollen and very tender. When palpating it is sending sharp pains in other area of my abdomen also.

ihave tried calling GP today but all apts taken when I went online first thing this morning. I feel what I am enduring presently isn't down to diverticulitis but down to my issues around periods etc... can you give me any advice. My symptoms I have read about (which I have read a lot online) seems very much so like ovarian cancer. My age also is 49.

can anyone give me any advice on what to do next.

Thank you so much ! :)

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the surgery you needed to have and your symptoms.

I am afraid that we are unable to say what is the matter except to say that your symptoms are not necessarily anything to do with cancer. The symptoms that cause ovarian cancer are the same as far less serious conditions. You tell us that a CT scan showed an adnexal cysts and you don't mention if anything serious was mentioned.

However, you have been told to ask your GP for a referral to a gynaecologist so hopefully that will happen soon. You will then get an opportunity to discuss your irregular periods. But remember cysts can cause pain and abnormal bleeding. Also being perimenopausal can also cause irregular bleeding.

I hope you can get a GP appointment soon and then get your gynaecology referral.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Thank you Caroline for your reply.
yes, on my first CT scan after first lot of surgery, it was picked up then. The bowel consultant let me know about the cyst and that to mention to Gp, this was on my report also. After the CT scan I was taken in for emergency surgery, so consultant was eager to get me in for the surgery asap, although letting me know, the cyst could also be giving me some pain also and will need investigating, which will be done through GP.
Thank you for your response, hopefully I'll get answers soon.

    Jo :)
