Smear test- speculum breaks

Hello,

I would really like an advice from a professional please. I did have my smear test in December as I was not relaxed and the nurse at the GP practice did not give me enough time to do so. She tried to insert the plastic speculum and it did break. I believe it broke inside of me . She then said " you are bleeding! "  She sounded like it is a lot.

I was so shocked and I did not know what to say.
The bleeding lasted for 2-3 days ( it wasn't too much)

since then I have not been bleeding ( except of course period days) . It did happend to have a very very small amouth of blood and mild cramps during ovolation time.
Does anyone know if the whole procedure could've done something harmful to me . Does anyone thing that the cramps and the small spotting during ovulation is normal or something to worry about? Is the bleeding could've been from the broken speculum ? And is it harmful to me if I do another smear test?

ps. I have been to the GP for a check up because of a mild yellowish discharge and she said that from what she sees the cervix looks good.

I'm really panicking , pls help

Thanks!

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your experience of having a cervical screening test done. However, I am sorry that we cannot tell you if the speculum breaking caused you to bleed. This is because many people bleed after a screening test and the speculum would not have broken.

This happening will not cause cancer, if that is what you are worried about. It is good to know that you had your cervix checked out since then and was told that it looks good. You also are likely to have had your screening result which may have come back normal.

I think the best thing to do, if you are worried about what happened, is to talk with the nurse that carried it out. She will be in the best position to say if the bleeding you had could have been related to it.

if you carry on bleeding in-between your regular period then do let your GP know, although for most people that will not be caused by cancer it is still a good idea to get checked out.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi Caroline,

I am not sure if I can talk to the lady who took the test as it is as I was sent to a different GP practice, which I am not a patient to.

Thank you very much for the reply !

    Many thanks,
