Skin biopsy

Hi. I've had a skin lesion since December. My GP thought it looked like a bite but whatever I used to heal it wasn't working. I then had a antibiotic cream and have also had oral antibiotics. Neither of these worked. I then saw a consultant at work briefly who thought it looked like either an infected cyst or possibly basal carcinoma. Obviously I panicked a little; even though I've read it is easily treatable and more than likely won't spread.

I had a referral from GP as it's just not going away. I would say  it's about 1cm maybe smaller it's grown since Xmas but now seems to have stopped but still not going anywhere. I had a biopsy a week and half ago and I'm just rly scared. In a way I feel I haven't heard anything so that could be positive but then I think is it taking longer because they need to do more tests. Even the consultants couldn't determine what it could be BH looking at photos so I'm just rly nervous :(

I rly don't know what I'm asking really I'm just worried and the wait is making me rly anxious. I don't even know what I'm expecting with the results; a phone call or letter?

  • Hello LisaE and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate how unsettling it is to be waiting for biopsy results and coping with uncertainty - I think most people struggle with some anxiety until they know the score. There are lots of skin conditions aside from cancer so try to keep an open mind about what might be the matter for now.

Hopefully you will find out more in the next couple of weeks - I am not sure how you will be told what the results show. It seems this varies a bit from one hospital department to another. There is no harm in asking so you could contact dermatology outpatients to see if they can tell you any more.

In the meantime do your best to hold your nerve and keep your mind occupied on other things.

Feel free to give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Julia

Thank you for your advice. I understand where u are coming from and it all makes sense; just easier said than done I'm keeping busy but it just lurks in the background. I know there are many reasons for delay in results and as u say every hospital is different. It's just that I've had this since Christmas and it seems like it's been ongoing forever.

I will try to not overthink but it does help to talk. Thank you for listening. X
