Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has the same as me . I had a scan six weeks ago it showed a u4' suspicious nodule 4cm hypoechotic solid lump , with vascular peripheral flow. I then had a fna four weeks later and was given my biopsy results they said it showed suspicious, not saying benign and twenty percent of it is showing clusters of cancer . They said they need to remove the nodule and half of my thyroid and will know more then has anyone had the same

    It sounds like a worrying time for you.

    We have more information on our website about thyroid cancer and treatments which you might find useful.  As you will be having surgery, you should have a pre-op assessment with a nurse where you will be able to ask lots of questions about the operation, and find out what to expect.  You may also meet your care team at this appointment.

    Partial and total thyroidectomy (removing all and part of your thyroid) are big operations, which you will have under general anaesthetic.  You will usually spend at least one night in hospital afterwards.  Your nurse will talk to you about how to care for your surgery site and you will usually have check ups every few days to make sure everything is healing as it should.

    You have posted in the 'Ask the nurses' section of the website.  You may find you get more responses if you post in another section, but do remember that everyone can have a different experience and outcome, even when the diagnosis sounds very similar.

    Thank you for your reply, I was just wondering if you knew what it all meant not sure if it is cancerous or not , they said the biopsy showed suspicious and they needed to remove nodule and thyroid to treat it

    Hi Winter_0 and thanks for posting again.

    Interpreting test results can be very complex and sometimes doctors need to remove some tissue to be absolutely sure what is the matter. I think this might be the case for you.  To be clear, a fine needle biopsy from a thyroid nodule might not always provide the final answer, it can depend, and sometimes the doctors want to remove half the thyroid so they can examine it thoroughly in the laboratory to be certain. So your operation might be what is called 'diagnostic' in order to complete your investigations.  But this sort of surgery doesn't happen unless there is enough of a suspicion of cancer from the fine needle biopsy results.

    It sounds like it would be really helpful for you to ask your doctor to go through things with you, so they can explain exactly what has been found,  what they expect and what they might want to do as a result. 

    You can phone the doctor's secretary and ask them to call you.  If you are not sure of how to contact them you could phone the clinic where you had your biopsy and hopefully they can give you some details.  Or you can speak to your GP and ask them to talk things through with you.
