Throat and mouth concerns

Hi. Over the last 6 months I've been diagnosed with tonsillitis and given penicillin. They don't even work for a short time! It's mainly in the right side of my throat/neck/face and is always full of nasty gunk that won't disappear. This time I had to be a little firmer with the GP when he wanted me to take penicillin again, surely if they haven't helped the previous 5 times why keep going!
I asked to be referred to an ENT doctor because im really worried. My throat is so swollen I can barely swallow, saliva is pooling in my mouth becasue I can't swallow it and the force I'm putting on my mouth to try and get rid of it has made me break 2 teeth! My mouth is full of little white blisters and cleaning my teeth with toothpaste feels like I'm brushing them with acid! I'm totally drained and miserable. I've tried every throat spray I've been prescribed and gargled salt water...nothing helps. My body is telling me that something is very wrong and should I trust my gut instinct?
Any advise would be appreciated.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. What a horrible time you are having.

I am at a loss as to know what to say as I am not involved in your care. You say that you have asked to be referred to an ENT doctor and I do hope that may be happening.

If you haven't seen a dentist recently I wonder whether that would be helpful to ask their advice. Dentists are also able to refer patients to doctors so it may be worth talking to them.

The NHS have produced some information on sore throats but you have probably been following all the recommendations but if not have a look here

The NHS has also produced some tips on treating mouth ulcers which you can see here

You may also find it helpful to talk it through with a pharmacist and ask their advice about anything that you can take to relieve the discomfort that you are feeling.

If you have always seen the same GP in the practice it may be helpful to get the input from another within the practice. It can sometimes help to see someone with a fresh set of eyes.

I do hope that it all clears up soon.

    With all the best,

    Catherine

  • My dentist has given me the all clear and ruled out that it's not dental related.
The ENT appointment could take weeks but I haven't any choice other than to wait and worry in pain and discomfort.
Thank you for taking the time to reply anyway.
    Cate.
