Callback after mole removal - anxious

I had a mole removal 3 weeks ago at the hospital on my arm and was told I would receive my results by letter and the surgeon even specifically said she was pleased with my stitches and thought it would heal well but they never really have to see people back unless it's bad news to really see these things. I received a phone call today from the hospital telling me I needed to come back on Friday to see them, they explained as they're a secretary they couldn't tell me anything and wouldn't even tell me if it was further treatment or for bad news etc or if I could go back to work afterwards. I have never had anything like this before I'm only in my mid 20s but am pale with red hair as well as having a family history of skin cancer so I know potentially more susceptible to skin cancers. Has anyone been called to go back after a removal and if so what for? Is there any chance I'll arrive Friday and they'll want to do any form of treatment or tests on me? I'm feeling so worried and really would appreciate any experiences or help

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are waiting for results and I can only imagine how unsettling it must be for you.

Unfortunately I don't think that anyone can tell you what the surgeon is going to say until you have seen her on Friday. Secretaries are never allowed to give information whether it is good news or bad. Sometimes patients are asked to come back because they need to remove more of an area around the mole but I am not sure if that is the case in your situation.

Every case is slightly different so it is difficult to compare one persons situation with another. Try and wait until you find out more from the surgeon on Friday and try not to over think it all.

I am not sure whether they will do any treatment if it is needed at that appointment as they may want to go through your results but of course without being involved in your care it is difficult for me to second guess.

I can understand that you are impatient to know more but do try if you can to take your mind off it all whilst you wait.

If you feel that it would be helpful to talk this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are more then welcome to give us a ring. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you for your response and the calming words! Last time I was phoned on the Monday after my medical photography appointment and told to come in Tuesday all very vague and had the mole removal then so felt really traumatised and anxious after the unexpectedness of it all and the lack of communication. Finding it hard to not worry about what may happen...
