Colposcopy Biopsy Bleeding

I've had a colposcopy biopsy 3 days ago now. I've had severe cramping and quite heavy bleeding almost like a period ever since, but I've also noticed a few large clots. I came off the DEPO in October last year and have only had two periods since so I'm not leaning toward a period starting at the exact same time I feel it would be a bit too conincidental.

Any advice on if this is normal or not would be appreciate or should I take the advice of the ward nurse and attend a&e for some pain relief. Only issue with this is I've had problems with being in a&e before due to prior sensitive trauma and I'm not sure my mental health can take it this time.

*edit, not sure if this has any relevance with the procedure but I also had a pulmonary embolism in 2017.

  • Hello and thank you for posting, and I'm sorry you are getting these side affects since your colposcopy. It is normal to feel discomfort and have some bleeding for up to a week after this procedure.

Using a hot water bottle and over the counter pain killers may help until this pass's.

This said, if you feel concerned, you can always give the unit where you had the colposcopy a call or call your GP.

Here is a leaflet provided by an NHS trust with good guidance which might be useful, but bear in mind that the phone numbers included are for a specific HNS trust rather than your local one .

Take care and if you want to give us a call on the nurse helpline the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
