Painful left breast

Hello.

Looking for advice and information as I have had a very painful left breast for nearly a week. I thought it was a bruise from playing netball or just normal monthly breast pain but it's unlike anything I have had before and it's getting worse each day not better. There's nothing visually to see but it's painful to touch and I have aching/shooting pains in it. Almost like mastitis. My children are 11 and 8 and I am definitely not pregnant.

I am booked in on Tuesday to see my GP but would you advise going anywhere sooner? Has anyone had similar symptoms?

obviously very worried. ️

  • Hello Parkside09 and thanks for posting,

I am glad that you have made a GP appointment to get this pain looked into and am assuming your appointment is for tomorrow. Unexplained symptoms that might potentially be due to cancer can be very worrying, but a lot of the time something else will be the matter, so try to keep an open mind.

If the GP feels it is indicated, they might decide to refer you to your local NHS breast clinic. Urgent referrals (if cancer is a possibility) are often seen within a couple of weeks, but not always. Your GP should be able to tell you if there is a backlog at the moment or, if you have been referred, you could phone the clinic to find out when you will be seen.

With health matters, many people find waiting and not knowing to be nerve wracking and some people choose to pay privately to speed things up, but it can be expensive. If you were to be referred to the breast clinic, but your GP might not think it is necessary,  you might well be seen quickly so do talk this over with your GP when you see them tomorrow.

I hope your GP is able to reassure you and tell you more.

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays, from 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
