Psa levels

Hi

I had radical prostate robotic surgery just under two years ago, my PSA levels stayed under 0.03 for one year , however it is now rising 0.01 every month. I have just had another blood test and it's now at 0.11 . I understand this is still very low but I have been told that I will possibly need a PSMA scan later this year if the pattern stays the same. My question is what (if I have to have it) is radiotherapy like and does it have any side effects, if it does happen they have told me it's every day except weekends for 4 weeks ???

  • Hello Pistol and thanks for posting,

Unfortunately, radiotherapy after surgery for prostate cancer can potentially cause side effects and doctors can't usually predict very well who will develop them to a bothersome extent. You can read some general information about radiotherapy for prostate cancer on our website at this link and on the website of another charity, Prostate Cancer UK here

Radiotherapy is often given everyday from Monday-Friday with weekends off over several weeks; four weeks sounds about the right sort of timeframe but this is something an oncologist (cancer doctor) who specialises in radiotherapy would need to confirm. And should you need it, they would go through possible side effects with you so you could decide what to do and give your consent if you wanted to go ahead.

The best source of information about any treatment in terms of the likely individual benefits and harms will come from the specialist team who know all about you, I can appreciate you wanting to look into things as much as is possible now but you probably can only go so far with it for the moment.

Please give us a ring if you want to talk anything over, the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around from 9-5 weekdays.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Thank you Julia for getting back to me , I am feeling fine about it all and my cancer team are superb and provide with lots of support, they are always there if needed. I feel that talking to others may also help as we are finding it a waiting game . I know my psa levels are still really low and at this present time nothing can be done until it reaches 0.2 so hopefully no treatment will be needed until Nov/Dec 23

but you never know it may stay at its present level ?
