Breast lump

Trigger Warning: mention of abuse

Hi, I'm 22 and female. I had a GP appointment 2 months ago because I noticed one breast was suddenly bigger than the other. The GP found a lump and told me it's likely to be a fibroadenoma as it moves easily under the skin which is reassuring. She also said she wouldn't expect me to have cancer at my age but said not to think that just because I'm young, I can't have it and I should always get breast changes checked. I think that was really good advice.

It's grown more so I contacted my GP practice this morning. They booked me an appointment for this afternoon but unfortunately, I couldn't make it. The next appointment that's available is in 2 weeks so I've booked that.

I don't know if I should mention this but when I was 13-15, breast flattening with heat happened. Could this mean I'm at more risk of having problems? I'm worried I won't feel comfortable mentioning this to that GP and there's another GP at that practice who speaks more gently so I'd rather talk to her.

  • Hello Ezlyn2001 and thanks for posting,

As it has got bigger I think it is very sensible to ask your GP to take another look at this lump, hopefully it won't be anything to worry about, but it is best to be on the safe side.

I am sorry to learn that you experienced breast flattening when you were younger.

I haven't been able to find any reliable research to say that breast flattening has been linked to a noticeable increase in the risk of breast cancer in later life, but it can have an effect on breast tissue and cause things like scarring and uneven breast development.

Things like this can be difficult to disclose but I think your doctor would want you to trust them enough to share what happened to you. See how you feel, and if you don't get an appointment with the GP who you feel more comfortable with, you can try and get one another time.

Please give us a ring if you want to have talk things over.  Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around from 9-5 weekdays.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
