Waiting CT scan results :-/

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the group. I'm currently under investigation for suspected bowel cancer. So far I've had a colonoscopy which showed i had diverticular and last Monday the 27th February i had a CT scan with contrast. I've since contacted the radiology department and been told that my report has been completed and sent through to the colorectal surgery department to the person that requested the scan which it was it was my GP so abit confused about that. Anyways I've asked the receptionist if she would be able to me if it was good or bad and she said which i expected that she isn't medically trained to tell me and she would email the consultant to get a letter sent out to me. I asked if i would need a follow up appointment and she said no I shouldn't need any follow up appointments. Does that mean it's ok? Sorry I'm so nervous, I've had thyroid cancer before and i have a strong family history of bowel cancer.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Kim and thanks for posting,

It is never easy waiting to hear the results and what it all means. It is also hard when you have had a cancer diagnosed in the past and know others who have been affected.

Receptionists are on the whole taught not to give any information about a patient over the phone whether it be good news or not. As you are probably aware we can't really comment on your case as we are not your doctors involved in your care so it is difficult to speculate.

It does however sound encouraging that the consultant does not need to see you again.

I think you will just need to wait until you get the letter before you know more.

Once you get your letter if you would like to talk through any of it then do get back to us or give us a ring.

Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you for your reply Catherine, I really appreciate it. I'll post an update once my results come through. Would they send a letter if it was cancer or would they arrange for me to see a consultant? Last time i was told over the phone.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Kim and thanks for your further post

There have been many changes to appointments and hospital visits since the pandemic.  This means it is not unusual for face to face appointments to change to telephone and vice versa depending on the particular hospital involved and how they are managing their out patients appointments.

    I hope you hear soon.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
