Armpit/inner arm still sore despite clear mammogram

I had a 2week pathway Breast Clinic referral after reporting 10/14 days of discomfort in upper arm next to breast, and near front of armpit and a sort of intermittent long 'line' if breasts were flexed/pushed together.  I saw consultant who did physical exam + mammogram.  These were both fine and he said it could be hormonal - I'm perimenopausal and started HRT 5 months ago.

I am getting worried now because the pain is still there, and now I can actually feel the fatty pad at front of armpit looks bigger on sore side and I can now feel something like two small  grains of rice when I press around the front of that armpit!

My problem is that we're going abroad for a wedding till 24th, so soonest I can see GP again is 27th. I don't know what to do as the holiday is for family wedding and will be 1st we've seen family since Covid started.

This last 2 years have been awful with some major illnesses + losses.  I'm now scared again that this is serious and I'm doing harm by delaying further investigations.

if it is serious, will waiting another 2.5 weeks negatively impact anything?  Not sure I could cancel the trip (we leave tomorrow) and even if I did, GP is so busy I may not even get seen before 27th!!

Sorry to sound so dramatic, the clear mammogram/consultant exam should reassure me, but the pain/swelling is concerning (& I heard that mammograms can be wrong)

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

Looking back at your posts I see that you were seen in the breast clinic a week ago and thankfully everything was okay.  You did the right thing in going back to your GP because you still have concerns about the discomfort you have.

I am afraid that it is not possible for us to tell you what is the matter, however, it is reassuring that nothing was picked up at the breast clinic. While no test is 100% accurate the mammogram is the best type of scan to look at breasts and you were also checked out by a breast specialist  So, it is unlikely that anything would have been missed.

I think the best thing to do is not to touch and prod this area, as doing this could make your symptoms worse and go to see your GP at this appointment.  Having some time that may , hopefully, take your mind of what is worrying you may help you to see if by the 27th things improve.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
