Discharge after radiation

Hello

My brother in law after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer , had a stoma op. Is it normal for the discharge from the bottom area to get a lot worse after radiation? He has a rectal tumour and the discharge down below has got worse since radiotherapy . Thanks

  • Hello CHUGH041 and thanks for posting,

I am very sorry to learn about your brother in law and can understand you wanting to support him.

I'm afraid I can't say for sure what is going on so I think the best thing to do would be for your brother in law to contact the hospital team involved in his care to let them know about this discharge and get their advice.

Radiotherapy can cause changes to the bowel/rectal wall so that excessive mucous can be produced which might have something to do with this discharge. In general radiotherapy side effects can get worse in the few weeks after treatment ends before starting to improve, but may linger for a while.

The hospital team know all about your brother in law so are in the best position to be able to say what is causing the discharge and how best to manage it. I hope he can easily get in touch with them and that they can help.

Please do give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around from 9-5, weekdays.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
