lletz results

Hi,

over the last few years i have been for multiple smear tests, first starting at 24 just 4 months before my 25th birthday, and every year since. the first year i had it done i did ot receive  letter regarding my HPV results and just my luck it came back postive. I was called continously by my nurse the folling year for a recall as i did not know my results and they wanted me to go in for another one jyst to see if there was any changes or it had resolved itself. i had recieved mt results a few weeks later and it had come back that i would need to go to the hospital for a colposcopy to check, at this point i had only had low risk changes and they asked me to come back in a year  hoping that again it would have resovled itself.

coming to the 2nd colposopy in decemeber  after receiving the ressults that i had medium (severe) changes, i went in for my colposcopy and from that they seen that i had to have a biopsy done as there were more changes they could see (CIN2), i recieved my results the beginning of this year i was clled about these and i was given my appointment dat for my LETTZ over the phone. i went in at the beginning of febuary and i have just recieved my result today.

after this long explaination of this situation i am just looking for some clarification. my doctor has written within the letter that he had performed this and had sent my sample or whatever it was to histology. the results that came from this has shown CIN2 and Focal of CIN3. i have been asked to go back for a follow up smear in 6 months.

this is confusing me and just wanted some form of advice on this so i dont really look like an idiot when calling my doctor on monday to be able to get  nurse to explain this to me.

thank you :)

  • Hello clairmariie123 and thanks for posting,

It might be better if you call us (if you can and have the time) as these things are sometimes easier to explain on the phone. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays 9-5.

In cervical screening, if the HPV test is positive, the nest step is to look for changes/abnormalities in the cells that are brushed off the cervix.  This is what the high grade (moderate or severe) changes referred to.

As well as this there is another way of describing these changes called CIN (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia). CIN measures the depth of the abnormal cells in the very thin layer of skin covering the cervix and classifies them from 1-3. A biopsy result is needed to be certain about CIN, but moderate and severe dyskaryosis often go hand in hand with CIN 2 and CIN 3 respectively.  You can read more about CIN on our website at this link and on the website of another charity Jo's Trust here.

In cervical screening several things add up to complete the picture, the HPV status, the cell and colposcopy examinations and the histology report if any tissue is removed with a biopsy or a LLETZ. It sounds like your results show mostly CIN2 together with what I assume is a smaller focal area of CIN3. But ask your GP to confirm this or try and speak the colposcopy clinic.

The idea of cervical screening is to pick up abnormal cells, assess them and when needed remove or destroy them so cancer doesn't develop in the future. When treatment is needed another screening/smear test is done routinely after 6 months.

I hope this explains enough but it not do call us.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
