We're worried if it's cervical cancer or a malignancy tumour

Hi everyone,

As I'm sure you're aware whenever you hear the word lump or mass it gives me a horrible feeling and gets me in a panic state which I can't of course show that to my mum :(

My mum had a transvaginal scan two days ago and they found a 19 mm heterogenous mass that is calcified on her cervix that is causing pressure on her bladder I believe but it's causing her so much pain that she is not sleeping.

Does anyone know what a heterogenous mass is or if anyone has had a similar experience that can ease our concerns?

Best wishes

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

The term used is describing a mass in the tissue of the cervix, it doesn't define it as anything specific. I can appreciate that you are trying to work out what it is, but that won't be possible until further investigations are done I'm afraid. Try and keep an open mind, and keep yourself busy and distracted, as this can help.

Hopefully you will get to find out more soon,

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Vanda,

    Thank you for your reply.

I'm just worried I only really have my mum and I feel like the doctor has made me feel even more as he was saying in worse case scenario, it is a lump that may need to be removed as it's been caught early. I'm then being told by the sonographer it's been there for ages so you can imagine the panic this has caused.

Would you be able to tell if a cyst or a fibroid has also been there for ages as I keep thinking the worst?

Thank you anyway for your response I really appreciate it. She will be seen by a private gynecologist this week so fingers crossed it all goes okay!

    Best wishes,

  • Hello C and thanks for getting back to us.

I can understand you asking but I am afraid I can't answer your questions properly. As far as I know,  because cysts are fluid filled sacs, they are usually identified with ultrasound scans because the sound waves in the scan produce a characteristic picture. I don't know how a sonographer would know how long a cyst had been around and I can't tell you anything about what fibroids usually look like.

For a lot of people, any kind of abnormal test result can trigger worry if not panic, but try your best not to anticipate what is going on with your mum and keep an open mind.

I hope the appointment with the gynaecologist is soon and goes well.

Please give us a ring if you want to talk anything over, our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,
