Fluid in uterus

Hello, I have had an aching pelvis for several months and back in October I felt like I was urinating more frequently.
In January I went to the doctors as the pelvic bone felt incredibly tender as though it was bruised. They checked a water sample and it showed blood and leukocytes and from my symptoms and I had a slight temp I was started on anti-biotics as it pointed to infection. The sample was sent away and came back no growth.

i have had 2 further samples tested as are still showing blood and leukocytes and they still come back with not bacterial growth. I've been put on another course of antibiotics.

I was referred for a scan of my pelvis, this showed that "odd position of womb and fluid" so now being referred to Gynaecology.

I am 43 and peri menopause (I've been experiencing peri menopausal symptoms to roughly 4 years) I take Cerazette so have no periods. I had odd discharge following an internal but it occurred 2 weeks after the procedure.

I will be being referred to urology for the blood in urine with no infection.

my question is what causes fluid in the uterus and is it classed as a non-urgent referral?

thanks,

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

It does sound like you have a lot going on a the moment in terms of your health so I am sorry to hear about this. It must be a worrying time for you.

Be reassured that you are being referred to specialist teams to find out what is the matter. Please remember that these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have cancer.

Fluid can happen in the uterus for many reasons such as polyps, infection and fibroids and in most cases it is not caused by cancer.

An urgent referral is made if there is a concern (by a doctor) that someone could have cancer, although most people will find out that they don't. If you are unsure what type of referral has been made then get back in touch with your GP practice as they should be able to tell you.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi there. I recently went for a gyno referral due to various symptoms, pelvic pain, some bloating and unusual bloods. (I'm 38) at initial scan they found that I had fluid and also funny enough mentioned my womb was in an unusual position. I had a follow up at gyno 2 weeks later and they said the fluid had cleared up, potentially could have been a burst cyst or something and that could have been causing my pain but nothing sinister. I will say my pain has been much better since. Womb is just in a slightly strange position but they said every woman is different, one of those things. So all good for me. I hope you have a similar result

  • Thank you! It's a relief to know its most likely nothing serious & to know I'm not the only woman to have oddly positioned womb.

im not being referred urgently so that's positive too I think.

Update ~ I have constant period type pain and heaviness in my pelvis. Saw Gynaecologist a week ago and now on a waiting list to have a stereoscopy.

I’m in quite a bit of discomfort, with still no answers.

I had a cystoscopy in April to see if they could determine the cause of my needing to urinate more frequently albeit with out any pain in passing. Every urine sample I provide has non-visible blood as well as leukocytes. The discovery was a patch of cystitis cystica - although had no follow-up!

I am being re-referred to urology.

    any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • Hello Tmom and thanks for getting back to us with an update,

I am sorry to learn that the pain is persisting and that you are no further forward in finding out what is the matter. It sounds like you are still waiting to hear what the gynaecologist thinks, presumably, they need to know if the hysteroscopy comes up with anything before they can give you their opinion.

I'm afraid I haven't come across cystitis cystica before but from what I have read it is a benign (non-cancerous) condition most probably due to chronic infection or irritation - a possible source of irritation could be bladder stones. If you haven't already, I think you need to talk it over with the urologist- perhaps this is what the re-referral is for.

This pain seems to have become quite chronic (long lasting), so it might be worth taking a look at a leaflet produced by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for patients with chronic pelvic pain which explains some of the potential causes. You can access it at this link.

Sometimes it takes a while to find out what is causing pelvic pain and the process involves ruling things out which might involve seeing different specialists and having a range of tests. I do hope that you find out more soon and things improve for you.

Do give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

    Hi,

I rang my gynaecologists secretary and I’m in the waiting list for the stereoscopy (urgent 3).

I was told that the current wait is 12 - 13 months!

I am going to ring the doctors as I’m in so much discomfort, I’m taking paracetamol regularly & using a heat pad when I’m sat. But I’m not getting any relief and the discomfort is waking me at night.
